  • Size Matters

    • Always consider a larger size for your rug. The number one mistake people make when decorating with area rugs is getting ones that are too small. However, you do not want the rug to go wall to wall, you need to leave floor space around the rug as a border. Give yourself anywhere from 8 inches to 2 feet of space on all sides - ideally, you want equal space on all sides but the goal is to have the rug centered in the room.

  • When selecting an area rug, make sure that it extends under all the key pieces of furniture in the room. If you can fit a rug large enough to have all of the furniture on top of the rug, that is a perfect scenario, however, if this isn't possible, it is completely acceptable to have the front legs of major upholstered pieces on the rug and the back legs off.

  • In a dining room, the rug should be large enough for the chairs as well as the table. The chairs should be on the rug, even when they're pulled out from the table. Remember to still allow floor space around the perimeter of the rug.

In a bedroom, the rug should extend beyond the bed. Ideally, you want the floors immediately around the bed covered with a soft surface so that in the morning you don't put your feet down on a cold, hard floor. The larger the bed the larger rug space will be needed around the bed. Typically you will find that a minimum of 12" for a twin or full bed, and 18" and larger for a queen or king bed will suffice. Remember, it is always better to go larger where you can as long as the rug still floats in the room.

  • Keep your main walkways in mind, while it is okay to have rugs in high-traffic areas you must be aware that when walking though, you shouldn't have one foot on the rug and one foot off the rug. The room size, the furniture layout, and the typical path of travel are all factors which may encourage your rug size.

  • As you look for the perfect rug for you home, take a moment to see the cleaning instructions. Natural fiber rugs are usually inexpensive, but they can't be cleaned. It's best to avoid placing expensive area rugs in areas where there are likely to be spills and accidents. Weigh your options and your budget before buying.

  • Rugs that are 8'x10' and larger are great for open floor plans and large spaces. A 6' to 7' sofa can easily be placed on this rug size.

  • Rugs that are 6'x9' and smaller are best for smaller areas or areas that have less furniture. A fireplace with a couple of chairs and a side table would work nicely on this rug size.

  • Rugs that are 3'x5' and smaller runner sized rugs are great for accenting spaces such as kitchens, entry ways, and other landing areas.

  • Playing with shapes and layering rugs to fit your style is always acceptable and encouraged! Try round or oval rugs to contrast the corners of a room and help the room feel larger. Round rugs are also a great complement for curved furniture and walls. Try a square rug for a space that is more narrow where a rectangular rug may look awkward. The equal sides of a square rug may bring the balance that you're looking for in a space.

  • Rugs are not permanent, while you might find the perfect versatile rug for all year round, it is always fun to switch out rugs to bring in brighter colors in the spring and summer and cozier colors in the fall and winter.
